THE HISTORY & LORE OF: FURT

Angela: Hi everyone, and welcome
to Casual FC Presents Bag Passes.

I'm your host Angela Morales with
my co-host Mario Salazar and the

expert of the day, my fiance.

Eva Friedman,

Eva: Sup y'all.

Mario: I am

Angela: as you may remember,

back passes is our new kind
of sort of ongoing series.

It kinda helps provide some context
and cliff notes of the lore,

the history of WoSo of women's
soccer in the US and abroad.

And then maybe we'll get some
interviews going on along the way, but.

Tonight due to Eva's love of this
situation and also a request from

a member of a supporter group
who, left a comment on YouTube.

We are presenting fort.

Mario: I, like I just said,
I'm nervously excited for this.

I am coming to this.

Completely, completely new.

And I even name myself FURT Newbie
on this thing because have no clue.

I have so restrained myself.

Google this,

Eva: I'm really proud of you.

Mario: I, I think it's been
like over a month or something.

but this also just goes to show, go drop
a, a comment in, our u on our YouTube

videos or on wherever you're listening.

'cause I see them, I share
them with Angela all the time.

We respond.

And, it's all a good time.

And if you guys have suggestions,
hey, making content is hard.

So.

Angela: It's hard and there's so
many things to possibly talk about.

So if we know you're excited about
something, in this case vert, which is

very important, in the lore of it all,
sometimes this happens and we just like

fast track it 'cause we're like, oh yes.

So, Eva's going to.

Deliver a fantastic PowerPoint
that I have not seen.

I have not been allowed to even look
at her computer in the last four days.

Mario hasn't seen this.

We have not seen a single
slide, a single anything.

Take it away.

Eva: I, first of

Angela: of all.

Eva: I would like to thank both God
and Jesus for allowing me this platform

to talk about and evangelize Ft.

I

Angela: appreciate.

Eva: someone asked for this as well.

this was one of the first ideas that
we kind of tossed around when we came

up with the concept for back passes.

this was one of the first things that
we thought could be like a fun episode.

And so as soon as someone
asked for it, I was indulged.

I felt encouraged.

it, it felt like someone just opened
Pandora's box and I got to escape out.

thank you for allowing
me to talk about this.

This is my passion.

This is my life's work.

This is incredibly meaningful to me,
and I hope you all enjoy the ride.

And you can open your eyes.

Mario: Colorful.

I.

Angela: I love it.

Eva: Thank you.

I chose the color of women.

there's only one and it's pink.

so

Angela: Here we go.

Eva: An oral history.

Mario: For.

Okay, so, again, we have not
seen this and this is gonna, is

already starting off amazingly.

there

Angela: purposefully bad.

Mario: there's animations,
there's slide transitions.

So for everyone who's listening first,
listen through this thing 'cause

you're probably listening during your
normal time when you listen to us.

Perfect.

But do yourself a favor.

Go to the YouTube and
watch the presentation too.

we're gonna describe what we have so
far, but you know, we can't get super

Angela: You don't get the full vibe.

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: this is very much like
we're looking at comic sands

neon pink soccer ball animation.

This is so wonderfully terrible.

Thank you.

Please continue.

Eva: It is all in the spirit of ft.

Angela: It is.

Eva: clear as we, as
we move through so ft.

An oral history.

A presentation by Eva Friedman
and Casual FC back passes

the year 2016.

Women's soccer in America, clinging
to the high of the 2015 World Cup win.

Angela: Look at the babies.

Cling looks so young.

Pinot looks so young.

Eva: We all

Angela: Like

Eva: have hope for the
future in their eyes.

Angela: I know Alex Morgan in the back.

Oh my god.

Such babies.

Eva: Like they look so not as traumatized
as we all are now, 10 years later.

Angela: Yeah.

That's fair.

Eva: There's like a certain like
lightness, like a levity in all

of their eyes of oh, not yet.

anyway.

So women's soccer in America is clinging
to the high of the 2015 World Cup win.

How are they doing that you might ask?

The Federation decides to fully lean
in and create the She Believes Cup.

Why?

Angela: believes.

Eva: Why did they create the She
Believes Cup because of feminism,

and we all know that it's not
at all infantalizing to call a

professional sports tournament.

She believes.

Mario: every now and then, I
think I'm gonna have to interject

with, with describing what we

see.

Eva: Yeah, I'm pausing for you.

Yeah,

Mario: we have our famous, Shiva
inu, the, the wonderful meme

Shiva with some falling leaves.

Eva: because

Angela: my God, it's perfect.

Eva: she believes.

Angela: Sheba.

And I remember when Sheba like launched
and everybody's what about Heba?

Does he believe?

And then it was like, oh, right,
no, because they don't win.

Eva: Yeah,

Mario: Yeah,

Eva: They don't.

But if you recall, if you watched the 2015
World Cup, I believe that we will win.

So

Angela: Yes,

Eva: this brings us to the league.

The league has to get in on this.

The league also wants us to know
that they're very feminist and they

wanna tell us exactly who these
players are that play in this league.

Angela: very feminist, much women.

Eva: And why does the league
wanna tell us who these women are?

More feminism.

Mario: Please do yourself a favor
and come to the YouTube and watch

this.

Angela: There.

Right now there are, I don't
know, 15 different like feminist

Mario: gifts.

Eva: In the style of, in the
style of balls, FC Girl Boss

Angela: Yeah.

Eva: yeah,

Angela: Yeah.

Very.

Eva: go ahead.

Angela: No, just it's so, it's very
2016 white feminism and I love it.

Eva: Yeah.

I

Angela: I thought,

Eva: not including, or I thought about
only using images of white women.

For this little slide, but that
felt like maybe it was too far.

So,

Angela: but you're not wrong.

Eva: yeah.

So, but where I chose to be a
little bit more inclusive, there's

even a woman lifting a weight.

Who knows how much is on it.

There's a woman riding her bike.

There's the red flower emoji girl,
like the, the whole crew is here.

There's a scientist.

There's a judge.

Like we.

All of the women in the world
are represented on this slide

Angela: All of them.

Eva: all of them.

And so the league decides to
make sure that we know that the

players are stronger, faster,
and that they will go further.

But that wasn't enough.

No, no.

Angela: can't wait for
Mario's reaction right now.

Oh my God.

Eva: mad that I can't see it because
I'm sharing the screen, but the league

needed to show that they were the
most feminist, than anyone, more than

all the leagues in all the lands.

They were the most feminist.

So they made sure that we knew
that the women were strong, her

they were fast, her.

Which brings us to,

they would go for her.

Angela: 10 outta 10

Eva: Thank you.

Thank you.

Angela: Mario's, not even in screen.

He is laughing so hard since I
know you can't see him right now.

Eva: no.

Yeah, I, I can hear the gasps for air.

Mario: Oh, my

eyes

Eva: Yeah.

Yeah.

Mario: who, oh geez.

And I thought Balls of
Sea was like the first,

Angela: Oh, no, no,

Eva: no, no, no, no,

Angela: no, no, no.

Eva: no.

FT

walked.

So Balls FC could run.

FT is the grandmother of all wo
so memes as far as I'm concerned.

Angela: Oh man.

Oh.

Mario: oh.

Was,

Eva: So we're here.

Mario: there was no one in the room.

Like honestly,

Eva: I think there were too, I think.

No, no, no.

I think there were people in the room.

I think they were the wrong people.

Mario: so we, okay, let
me ask this question.

Eva: Yeah,

Mario: and if this is going to be answered
as we keep going, please continue.

Eva: of course.

Mario: When all of this was being
translated, the, you know, from

the, the, she believes from the,
the stronger the, the, all of that.

So was it visually separated this way?

Eva: I'm

Angela: I.

Eva: you asked.

I'm so glad you

Angela: Get ready.

Prepare yourself.

Buckle your seat belts

Eva: because thus is the birth of.

These were real images put
into the public by the league.

Mario: What,

Angela: like they were sideline banners.

They were at like it was everywhere.

Mario: but I, I, I understand strong and
I understand fast and yes, it doesn't roll

off the tongue, but, but, they're words.

Angela: But like faster.

Eva: But her,

Mario: But

Eva: her is there.

Yeah.

And that's all that matters because
women, we're not gonna think for her.

We're too stupid to put that together.

So we see strong her fast, her further.

We're not smart enough to separate
the way everything else has been

Angela: Because also when you have
strong spelt like this, does the

GH turn into the GH and cough?

Eva: stronger like that

Angela: Sean for,

Mario: Strong fear,

fat.

It's

Angela: it's like speech
impediment's, worst nightmare.

What is this word?

And God forbid you're colorblind because
everything is also green and pink

Mario: Oh geez.

Angela: and white.

So it's all gray.

Eva: and if

Angela: if you.

Eva: colorblind accommodation for this
PowerPoint, let me know and I will

send it, send one to you, because I
just realized there's a lot of pink

and red and white and some green.

And so if you wanna
see this and you can't.

I got you.

are a DA compliant here at Casual fc.

Mario: Okay.

Eva: Important, not pictured
because I could not find it.

Me holding a fur sign at
the Angel City Home opener.

I swear this happened Angela.

Angela: It did.

I'm literally like, now that I know
that this is included, scrolling back

into the 2021 pictures to, to find it.

Eva: I couldn't find it.

I was livid.

Mario: you find it, I will, I
will put it on top of the slide.

Eva: Please do, because I searched
for probably like 20 minutes, which

is a long time when you're searching
digitally and could not find it.

That felt like the spirit of fur.

So it

Angela: It is the spirit
of fruit, frankly.

Eva: Yeah.

So now you may be wondering,
where do we go from here?

What's next?

Mario: You know, you miss the op, you
miss the opportunity of highlighting her.

Angela: Oh yeah.

Eva: true, but I'm no fool.

I'm no fool.

Get ready

Mario: You

Eva: because.

What I propose now that we are 10
years removed from, she believes,

I think there's one answer here,
and we need the He Believes cup.

Mario: with the camel.

Eva: It's the only logical option because

the Fed, it's one nation, one team pay.

You know, teams and everything.

So I think he should be
able to believe as well.

Men should be, the male players
should be able to believe.

Maybe that's why they
haven't won anything ever.

Angela: Maybe 'cause Yeah, maybe they
just don't believe they can't heba.

Eva: No, they can't heba so the
men's national team will be strong.

He.

Fast,

Andy.

Angela: I can't breathe.

Oh my God.

Mario: and the Thomas,

Eva: I just looked for
things that men like.

Angela: Oh my God.

Mario: must, yeah.

Angela: Meanwhile, there's like a
beautiful, I'm a man poster from the like

garbage worker strike in Memphis during
the civil rights era, which like, I'm

down for, but like right above it, there's
just a thing that says I'm oppressed.

Like I just,

this is,

Eva: just,

Angela: there's a

Eva: about things that

Angela: lion.

Eva: yeah, I wanted to make sure, I wanted
to think of things that would empower men.

So I found a scale where.

There's the women's symbol on
one side and the male symbol on

the other, and the on the scale.

And it's a little bit like the, the
men's side is a little bit higher up.

And then there's Thomas, the tank engine.

There's someone who looks
like a race car driver,

Mario: Yeah.

Eva: punching glass.

There's a bear.

there's a fighter jet.

some fire and stuff.

And then there's another jet
that's just going in a slow 360.

there's a big ass sailboat.

a Mustang, there's a lion roaring.

There's the I am a man sign, and
then there's the, I'm oppressed.

Angela: The pirate ship is my favorite.

Eva: I'm so glad.

I wanted there to be something
for everyone in this.

Mario: yeah, there's, there is
definitely something for everyone.

And I mean, the, the, the placement of
the fighter jet and the explosions were

going up the lion's rear, know, choice,

Eva: Believe it or not, believe
it or not, that wasn't on purpose

of all the things happening here.

That was the only thing that
I didn't do intentionally.

And this concludes

Furt.

Angela: Beautiful.

Mario: Beautiful.

Eva: Thank you.

Thank you,

Angela: 10 outta 10.

Eva: thank you.

Any

Angela: Any question

Eva: I.

Mario: is.

in all forms, entertaining in all

Angela: and like very, very rarely, truly.

I don't think there is a better
way to present for than that.

Like it shouldn't be serious.

Mario: okay, so take me back

to this era, right?

for both of you, how.

How ridiculous did you feel the,
the rollout of that was per, for

you as fans, but then also like
what, what was the vibe like?

Eva: I mean,

Angela: I mean, I felt it

Eva: infantilizing to the women.

thought it

Angela: was.

Eva: so condescending.

I thought it was insulting, like I maybe.

I, I got pretty hot about it, honestly.

Like I was deeply unhappy because you
also have to remember, like the league

is like barely getting to a year three.

We're praying that it succeeds to a year
four because the leagues own all of them.

Were at like three years and it's this is,

Mario: of Back

Passes

Eva: yeah.

Yeah.

back, back, past yourself
to the first episode, but.

we're all praying that
this league will succeed.

We're hoping that the 2015 World Cup
win and all the press that, like the

Carly Lloyd Hatrick got and everything,
Megan Rapinoe on Good Morning America

or something being asked to describe
herself in one word, and she flips over

the whiteboard and it just says gay.

And like all of that, like there
was so much really amazing, so

many amazing spotlights on the team
and on women's soccer in America.

And so to me, when the Federation and
the League's response is like, well,

let's roll out the she Believes cup,
and let's say that the players are

strong, her fast her for her, like it,
it kind of, it, it felt really lazy.

in hindsight, it's incredibly 2016
like that is so exactly where we were

this country, in the conversation.

and it was very funny.

It was very silly, but, and like we had
a lot of fun with it on the internet.

that being said.

I was just kinda what the
fuck are we doing here?

do we, do you want them to
be taken seriously or not?

And if you don't, then
why do anything at all?

Like it

Angela: Yeah, and,

Eva: do anything.

Angela: and Eva said, in
retrospect, a hundred percent.

It is 2016 feminism.

Like guys, we put the word her in there.

It's for women's.

but like how embarrassing that nobody
caught that and that they thought everyone

would be like, oh, it's totally fine.

what?

But yeah, it, it very much goes it,
it's paramount to know your audience.

Mario: Yeah.

Yeah.

Angela: This is a very big example.

Like you also have to understand like
this era of the NWSL of women's soccer was

like peak Twitter, peak Tumblr, and if you
were on the internet at all, those were

the places to be like, I have lifelong
friends from Tumblr, from Twitter.

I know Eva does too.

Eva: That's how we met

Angela: Yeah, like we ha our.

Eva: the internet.

Angela: And it's, so, it's like the
most millennial experience, like

the internet brought me together.

Like it's so whatever.

But all we did was make fun
of this in so many ways.

And like women's basketball
fans got looped in because they

were like, look at this shit.

You know, and that's where I came in
because I was watching the World Cup, but

I didn't know like NWSL stuff quite yet.

And I am coming at it like,
excuse me, what is this?

And if you're listening and not watching
the video and you have met me like three

times, you know exactly what face I made.

I, Hmm, what?

And what is that?

Eva: Yeah.

Angela: And it's just so bad,

Mario: so, yes.

Eva: yeah,

Mario: you know, with more
recent memory about the, the

Boston, too many balls debacle of

Eva: goat balls.

Mario: you know, you.

Did you, why wasn't there a person
in the room to say Hey, have you

heard what you've been saying?

Eva: Mm-hmm.

Angela: Do you listen to
yourself and you talk?

Do you think about it before
it comes out your mouth?

that's what it felt like and that's
what it like, honestly, it still feels

and yeah, we've been able to take
it and I think the way collectively,

woe, so fans banded around the,
what's the word I'm looking for?

Like the outrageousness
of how bad this was.

Mario: The

ridiculousness.

Angela: yes, it's, it's the epitome
of being a women's sports fan.

Mario: So,

Angela: You get something so good, you get
this World Cup winning and it's amazing.

And then it's like

Eva: And

Angela: for,

Eva: well, and at the time.

Women's sports weren't cool.

was not trendy.

It was not at all mainstream.

Angela: yeah,

Eva: you,

Angela: you, you

Eva: no

Angela: had to hunt.

Eva: Yeah, like there were no cool points
for sitting courtside at Sparks game or an

Angela: Yeah.

Eva: There was no like celebrity
investors in, you know, NWSL teams.

To be like, oh, we have a spotlight.

Like we have a platform.

We have a moment.

We have to grab this by the
balls and like really go for it.

And that's what they come out with.

It's is, this is never gonna go anywhere.

It was really kind of
defeatist in my opinion.

Mario: So as as a question though,
and this is just purely, you know, in

hindsight with, you think that campaign.

Would've done better
if they dropped for at

Angela: No,

Mario: would've been like a,
eh, I see what you're doing.

eh,

Angela: if they were gonna stick
with that, there should have been

like, there was, you know, the
Ally commercial, the Ally Bank.

Mario: Mm-hmm.

Angela: Where it's like everything
ends in Ali, like a LLY.

It would, it it could, yeah.

Financially, structurally, whatever.

Like you could have spent
more than 20 minutes on it.

that's what it felt like.

It felt like they had 10
minutes to get this together.

Boom, boom, boom.

Clip art, text box, italics.

Let's go.

Eva: I spent more time
on the intentionally bad

PowerPoint than they did on.

A marketing campaign for an
entire professional sports league.

Angela: Yeah, there's ways to, to
wordplay and highlight a part of

a word or, you know, adjust it a
little bit to make it really cool.

The Ally campaign is like the first one
that comes to mind because they use.

The, like ally as a word in so many
facets, in so many ways to show

support in families and communities and
sports and all these different things.

And Ft could have been that, but it
ended up as ft like it, it reminds me

of Poot and that's how, I don't know.

Do you know about, put.

For those who don't know.

Mario: Okay, so part, part, part

two of

Angela: No put has
nothing to do with soccer.

It's demi Lovato.

It's a whole thing,

Mario: Well,

we, we

Angela: it's like the
same thing in my brain.

There's a really terrible picture
of Demi Lovato and people are like,

that's her like twin that they keep
in the basement named put or whatever.

It's a whole thing.

I'll send you the picture,
but like it's hysterical.

Mario: Oh.

Angela: And it, it's
the same vibe of what?

Like every time you, every time I see
or say FT in my head, I'm just like, mm.

Like a record scratch
happens at the same time.

But I'm so grateful for like women's
sports communities when something

like this happens because we just
take it and we run and we just.

Bury it into the ground and it's
like you think we'll be like

people beat a dead horse, but

Eva: Yeah, like the people made signs
and brought it to the championship

that said fort like this last, like
this did not go away that season.

Like this was

Angela: I mean, we're talking
about it 10 years later.

Eva: it's still, and it makes
me sad that like it's, it's kind

of a little bit lost the lore.

Like I feel

Angela: Yeah.

Eva: after dark.

And like now, that's what we
say when something is crazy.

But Ft was used like when, there was
a game where the western New York

flash played on like field there
were no like out of bound sidelines.

Like the field was small and
like weird and everything.

And that we were like ft.

And so like like it, we just
kind of slowly got away from it.

And I personally think
that especially in this.

The 10 year anniversary of TI think
we should really re-embrace it and I

think that we should bring it back.

Mario: It.

There's, I mean, there's a
whole campaign that got redone

that is very FURT, adjacent.

So,

Angela: Yeah,

Mario: you know, maybe they did
try to bring him back for 2016,

Angela: we should, we should
bring back for like for 10

year anniversary tour shirts.

Mario: Yes,

that's what I'm doing this weekend.

Eva: I need 14 so that I can wear
a different one every day and not

have to worry about not having
one while I'm doing laundry.

Actually, no, I need 28 because I need
ones that I can change into to sleep in.

Mario: Oh

Angela: my gosh.

But yeah,

Eva: If this ever hits 1 million views,
I will get FURT tattooed somewhere on

my body, and when this hits 1 million
views someday you can come back and

tag me in it, and I will in fact do it.

Mario: I'm

Eva: There's a strong chance,

yeah, if I ever get money, like
disposable income, there's a chance

that I might just do it anyway.

So.

Angela: Yeah, don't,
don't put it pastor guys.

And quite frankly, like I'm not
a get matching tattoos with your

partner person, but like first for.

I'm down.

Let's go.

Mario: too

Angela: I would get a FURT tattoo.

Mario: just says FURT.

Eva: Are you serious?

Angela: Yeah, I would get
a FURT tattoo for sure.

Mario: Okay, we're starting the casual
Sea back passes, collection right now to

pay for the matching tattoos, Angela and.

Angela: We're doing it.

Screw it.

Screw a million views.

We're doing it.

Eva: texting my friend Dylan.

This is

Angela: Yeah.

Eva: the

Angela: would absolutely do.

Di we both have tattoos
that we love by Dylan.

I have a Woodstock on my shoulder.

Eva has, song lyrics like We love Dylan.

He is a fantastic tattoo artist if you

Eva: that, Eva has

Angela: Yeah.

Eva's got a few.

Eva: lovely friend who I

Angela: Yeah.

Yeah.

Eva: with quite a bit.

Mario: So with all of that,
guess what we cut out?

thank you for bringing for
to me, this was amazing.

I,

Eva: I.

Mario: the, the madness of what it was and
the fact that we're gonna try to revive

this, 10 years later is amazing and.

This is what back passes is about.

We're, we're gonna have fun with this.

We're going to go from, anything
from a serious topic to FURT.

And.

It's everything in between.

we, you know, our first episode
is a nice history retrospective of

the NWSL and where we are, today
and, you know, just WoSo general.

today was FURT next episode, you know,
might be some more history stuff.

So it might be another
very specific, unique topic

that

Angela: There.

Eva: yeah.

Mario: by one

Eva: Yeah.

And

Angela: There are a lot of things.

Eva: free to drop any requests
or ideas in, you know, dms

comments, especially the Discord.

We definitely see if it's, if it's
in the Discord, 'cause it might

be something that's on the list
and so it might get that thing

bumped up to the top of the list.

Mario: Exactly.

So with all of that, if you've listened
to us so far this, in this episode,

you probably like what you're hearing.

You probably had a good laugh and you
probably learned something the way I did.

F follow it, follow us.

You know, go to casual oc.com,

find all the links.

We're on YouTube.

Find all our socials.

They're all there at casual OC pod on
all the socials, and you know, have fun.

we're here to have fun.

And we're here to bring you,
all the lore, all the cliff

notes, all the, FURT and the.

You know, missing history that you
may not know of, that I don't know of.

'cause most of this is
all brand new to me.

give us a, follow.

Those are all the best ways
to help support the pod.

We also have a merch store,
shop dot casual c.com.

We have a random
assortment of stuff there.

And as we just said in this episode,
there's most likely going to be a

FURT t-shirt at some point on there.

Pretty soon.

And and if you also would like to,
help us and support the pod with

both casual FC and back passes,
check out, me a coffee.com/casual

FC pod.

It's a way to be able to throw
a buck or two, our way and help

us keep doing what we're doing.

if that's where you wanna donate to the
for tattoo fund, that's totally fine too.

You can even comment for Tattoo
Fund and we will bookmark it

for

Angela: We will allocate it differently.
