Mario: Welcome to Casual fc, an Angel
City Match preview and footy therapy pod
featuring two certified footy therapists,
although only one of us is here, the
other one is enjoying her birthday long
week and is going to be telecommuting,
uh, to the episode later on.
I'm your host Mario Salazar with my, Party
Loving Living Life Co-host Angela Morales.
Today is going to be a pretty succinct,
pretty quick episode, mainly because I'm
riding solo for the majority of this one.
This is our match preview of the rivalry
night, the chanclassico, the San Andreas
Cup match versus the San Diego wave.
It's going to be on Saturday,
May 9th at BMO Stadium, 4:54
PM It's gonna be on ionTV.
If you can't make it to the game,
it's going to be on iHeartRadio.
So listen up to Isaac and Tracey,
the homies, and we love them.
I was listening to the
last game with them.
I'm probably gonna be listening to
this match since I won't be able
to make it myself to this game.
I'll be listening on iHeartRadio.
It is the blackout match, so wear
your black wear the home kit,
the black home Kit, anything.
If you don't have a kit, just wear black.
It's the blackout.
Uh, we blackout SoCal.
We, as we take on the rivals, they're
probably gonna be in there, either
white or that kind of orange G
one that they have, um, right now.
So let's show them, you
know, what it's all about.
it's a rivalry match, so of course
there's going to be a fan fest.
The fan fest starts at 1 45
and it's gonna be out on the.
On the grass area.
Um, remember the differences
between the two are fan fests
happen outside the stadium on the
grass, usually way before the match.
a so Rosa rally is what
happens on the inside.
So what happened, uh, on the
kids' day match, all those
things happen on the inside.
But this one is a fan fest.
It's gonna be happening
at 1 45 out on the grass.
there's going to be a special performance.
and remember, this is collectible
pin number two, gateway giveaway.
It's going to be for the
first 5,000 I believe it was.
people.
If you get there early, try
to get inside the stadium, get
yourself, uh, one of the pins.
Remember they're, uh, this is number two
of five collectible pins for the season.
If you're into that, which I am, and
I'm really bummed that I'm not gonna
be at the match to be able to get that
pin I, you know, collect them all.
So with that, it's really Angela's fault
she's leaving me by, by myself on this.
She won't hear what I'm saying
until she hears this back.
If she hears this back.
So you know, it's her fault for
leaving me alone on one, the episode
preview for the San Andreas cup match,
and two, the episode that falls on.
May the fourth.
We're recording this a bit early,
mainly because of scheduling and
things like that, but I've got my
little partner Grogu here with me.
it's gonna be fun.
So let's get through this.
our last match was not
exactly the result we wanted.
the ref was definitely trying to
be main character in this match.
It was not going our
way in any way possible.
we were playing well, but every
single call was going against us.
Every single call that should have
gone for us did not go for us.
We were being felt left and right, and
it seemed like nothing was happening yet.
We breathed on them wrong
and we got a yellow card.
So, ultimately, you know, we ended
the game with a red, my got a red,
which was absolutely ridiculous.
I mean, I get it, I get it.
Contact what?
But it wasn't malicious,
it wasn't intentional and
it wasn't, endangering she.
Kind of pushed, slapped the back of
one of the players because as she was
trying to get the ball started, she
like just got all up in front of her.
And so yeah, there was a little
bit of frustration and I think the
frustration was already mounting
because of what the ref was doing.
So unfortunately, Mai got the red
she left in the at and it was the
stoppage time of the first half.
So that's what makes it even stupider.
Everybody got a yellow.
if you were in the stadium,
you might have gotten a yellow.
I don't know.
it's really stupid.
So honestly, the, the only thing I
can think of was my prompt was so many
yellows at dispatch did you get one?
And we will always kick off our
footy therapy whenever we have one.
We have a haiku from
Ethan, which was Utah Dive.
Much gross.
All chasing ball scattered play shame ref.
Prisca bump.
So yeah, there was so many calls
that were not going our way.
There was a call on Prisca that
should, should have gone our way.
There was a, many, many fouls.
and, you know, everybody
had some feelings.
Zach came in with the amount of yelling
I did in the stadium and in discord, just
a smidge yellow, apparently the ref likes
the color Yellow, uh, came from Wendy.
also, Hey, Wendy won tickets.
Uh, we had a quick giveaway
because, change of plans.
I couldn't make it to the game.
Decided to give away my tickets for
this game in a really kinda last
minute thing and Wendy actually
ended up winning our tickets.
So there you go.
and then a couple other comments
is, uh, the game gave you the most
anxiety and questioned my own sanity.
Surprisingly, no, that game was
out of control and ref you suck.
So I mean, the, the feeling
about the ref was just there.
Another comment that we got was, I'm going
to call it a win, that Ary didn't get
a second yellow card and honestly, the
way Ary was kind of losing her temper.
I'm surprised she didn't get a second
yellow card also, and I think it's kind
of that the refs knew she screwed up.
there was a play right after
the red that seemed like she
was trying to make up for it.
And it was just, it was dumb, really.
and we had a couple of.
Comments in footy therapy that said,
you know, it doesn't feel good, or, I
don't know what's happening or what's
going on, and I just wanna say we're
not all doom and gloom just yet.
We still, when we pull back from the
shitty feeling that we got from this
match, we will see that yes, we've,
we've won three and we've, lost three.
It does not feel good
to lose three in a row.
But we're still in a good place.
with that, you know, I'm actually gonna
jump down a little bit and jump all
around my notes, but we're currently
in eighth place with nine points.
We have two games in hand, and, uh,
just in case, you know, you're the
casual among all of us, and you don't
know what the games in hand means,
that means that most other teams to
this point have played two additional
games than we have, which means.
All things looking up,
looking glass half full.
We have a potential of six
points to be added to our total.
Now that with that, right now the top four
teams, Portland, Washington, San Diego,
and Gotham are all on eight games played,
and they are at, 19, 15, 15 and 14.
So if we were.
With all eight matches played and we
had the six points from the two wins.
We would actually be in third
place above San Diego because
of our goal differential, which
still positive goal differential.
I know we've been losing, it's not the
greatest, but you know, we gotta find
the silver linings in all these things.
So really it sucks that we drop the
points, but if we zoom out a little
bit, it's, we're not trending Good.
Or trending in a, in a nice way,
but it's not all doom and gloom.
I believe that our team
can turn this thing around.
And then one of the last foot
therapy comments that I'm gonna read
out is we have to course correct
and get right against San Diego.
We can't keep letting people
come into our house and beat us.
All the good vibes we've built
up in the first three games are
gone, and I'm slightly worried our
schedule isn't getting any easier.
Yes, but it's a long season.
This is game, we are on game six
of 30, so a little too early to be
complete doom and gloom, but you
know, let's just not make it a trend.
Like three is starting to become a trend.
Let's not keep that going.
Overall scores around the league We
have Houston tying with the Reign.
Zero zero.
We have Washington spirit
beating Orlando to four to two.
We have KC finally really
getting their points, winning
two to one over the courage.
Of course, we ended up losing
one to nothing, uh, against Utah.
Portland ended up winning
two to zero against Chicago.
Boston finally got their first win
against the other newcomers, Denver.
So it was a three to two match.
New York ended up beating Louisville
one to nothing, and San Diego in the
other San Andreas cup match, ended
up losing to BFC one to nothing.
So that.
let's see what Angela says about
what that's going to, do on
their way up the five to our home
and how that's gonna affect us.
I mean, I don't know.
And then, uh, the last check-in
that I really wanted to do, which
I'm gonna put on screen right
now is check the real standings.
The standings that really matter to
us at the moment, mainly because we.
Are the current leader
in the San Andrea Cup.
Indulge me for a second.
We are the current leader.
This is also including the matches
that, Bay FC and San Diego have played.
So with all of this, Bay.
FC has two matches played in
our San Andreas cup, so we
have one and so does San Diego.
But with all of that, we are
the victors right now with, uh,
one win over the rest of them.
So we are at three points in the standings
of the prestigious San Andreas Cup.
and as we can see, there's, we
have our matchups coming up and
our next matchup is this weekend.
So I am gonna hand it over to Angela
and I'll be back with you guys in a bit.
Angela: Hey everyone, it's Angela
coming to you from Rainy Sacramento.
I'm up north visiting friends
of mine for my birthday.
I first wanna say thank you to
everybody who stopped me at the game,
texted me, DMed me, messaged me at
all, and, wish me happy birthday.
I appreciate it more than you know.
It's been a wild week.
Thank you to everyone who
watched the panel on Sunday.
showed up in person like insane.
All of you are in just wonderful people,
and I'm so glad to have you on my corner.
Thank you.
Thank you, thank you.
Let's get to previewing this match.
So we're taking on San Diego
at BMO the chanclassico for
Mario, the San Andreas Cup.
It's a big frigging deal.
and uh, it's gonna be a doozy because
this weekend or this past weekend,
San Diego lost to Bay FC which.
Was so much.
Uh, one of my closest friends from college
is a Bay of C season ticket holder, even
though she's an Angel City fan at heart
and is texting me while Eva and I are
driving up the five, giving me details.
San Diego lost after Bay FC scored a goal.
Nutmeg, DiDi in the process.
They go up one, nothing.
San Diego earns the pk.
Silky blocks, the pk, they hold the line.
There's like three and a half,
four minutes of stoppage.
They hold it silky blocks, like
superhuman, because of course she is.
So on Saturday it's Saturday?
Yeah, on Saturday.
Angel City has to bring their A game
because San Diego's one gonna be mad.
And two, they're gonna be
playing to win because one,
nobody wants to lose like that.
Two.
It's us.
duh, it's San Diego, it's la.
It's a big deal.
The other wild part of this is
that their coach got into it.
The refs received a red
card and was sent off.
So Becky Tweed is now
coaching San Diego against us.
Of course, this is what happens
because we're Angel City and
nothing makes sense and everything
is crazy and everything overlaps.
Everything is.
Connected when it comes to us and
other teams coaching especially.
So the biggest thing is that I'm not
gonna cover an Angel City player.
Everyone just needs to lock in.
Everybody needs to show up.
My noose isn't gonna be on
the pitch unless the red cards
appealed and I don't know about it.
that's a whole weird, crazy situation
in and of itself from our last game.
Everyone is on Yellow Card watch.
It's just bonkers.
So the biggest thing is that we just
need to play Angel City Football.
We said it last week.
We need to show up as ourselves
and for ourselves and that will
get us the w we were this close.
so I really think this game against
San Diego is gonna be a really good
litmus test to see how we adjust, how
we come back from a game like that.
The biggest thing.
Is it San Diego has some bombass
players and it's stressful because San
Diego, we've all, like notoriously,
we've been an evenly matched team,
so it's always been yes, no, yes, no.
Who's gonna win?
Fast forwarding, we have our record
against San Diego is essentially
even, we've won three times.
We've lost twice.
We have three draws.
I would love for this to be four
wins, three draws, two losses.
After this weekend, we'll see, but.
There are three players on San Diego that
we have to have to have to mark, have
to pay attention to, have to understand
that they're gonna come out swinging.
The first one, Kennedy
Wesley, she is a center back.
She plays on their back line.
She is a force to be reckoned with.
She's earned her way up.
she's like a center back, but
also a left back, right back.
She's kind of just defense,
but also defensive midfield.
She's very versatile and so.
She is kind of taken the
league by storm, but quietly.
She's also gotten senior team call up.
She has six caps for the national team.
She spent her collegiate career at
Stanford where she's 102, or excuse
me, 104 caps so far in two seasons.
She has two goals for San Diego
and one for the national team,
and all of them were great.
She's incredibly fun to watch, which
is extremely frustrating because
I'm not going to be cheering for
her like I would be if she's on
the national team and she's spicy.
Like all of the women I'm
talking about today are fiery,
passionate, wonderful players.
And that's the one thing I
love about all three of them.
It's just through line of like aggressive.
I want to win and I'm
gonna do everything I can.
I'll put this game on my back.
So help me God.
You know, and that's something I
think that teams need in order to
push through those hard moments.
And I'm curious for Angel
City, who those players are
gonna show up to be on our end.
But Kennedy Wesley, she can
defend like a mad woman.
She will score if needed
and pay attention to her.
Plus she's just good.
She's fun to watch.
So obviously Gabby Portillo
is my second player.
We're talking to Brazilians tonight.
Also.
We've got Gabby Portillo and
Ldm because of course I'm
gonna talk about both of them.
Gabby is a forward attacking.
Midfielder kind depends.
She signed a big deal with Gotham,
spent one season there, scored three
goals, and then in the off season.
Everybody got the notification
that she's going to San Diego
and it was like, ah, crap.
So wild.
She was also, part of the silver medal
winning Brazilian team at the 2024
Olympics, which, or 2023, I don't know.
Olympic years got weird with COVID,
so she is absolutely a player who
will put the game on her back and
she scored three goals in Gotham.
She has of yet, she hasn't scored, with
San Diego, but I don't put it past her.
If nothing else, she'll draw defense in
and force the team to, to spread out and
double team, triple team when needed.
And that usually opens up other
players, allows other people to score.
So we wanna make sure that
she is locked down tight.
We don't want that to happen.
And then third and finally, Ludmilla.
I love when international
players have one name.
It's just that's who they are.
Marta Lu, like it's just dope.
It's so cool.
she's a forward, she spent time in
Chicago before moving to San Diego this
season, she had 13 goals in Chicago
and is mostly known for the hat trick
that she scored in 10 minutes against
North Carolina in August of last year.
It was absolutely insane, just bonkers.
And so she has the ability to do.
Like she, she can perform magic on
the pitch and I love that for her,
but I don't love that for our defense.
Um, I'm really hoping that we
show up and lock it down and
remember who we are in that sense.
She is also another super feisty player.
she's just damn good.
And like all of these, these three
are so fun to watch and that's the
hardest part is that I don't actually
want to root against them, but I
happily will when it comes to my team.
Mila also has six goals for
the Brazilian national team
and shows up when she needs to.
So if San Diego is a team that is
willing to get gritty to win and it's
very much a do whatever it takes.
And they've always been like that,
like since their inception in 2022 with
that, like when the expansion happened.
So.
It's really gonna be dependent on
how do we recover as, you know, how
Angel City recovers from the game
against Utah, and how do we show up in
a blacked out stadium for ourselves?
Are we playing Angel City football?
Are we playing, up to the standards
that we've set for ourselves as a team?
Because they're high and high.
Expectations are hard, but.
When you know you can do it, it makes
it a lot easier and I just hope we
remember that it's been a little bit
of a skid, but there's nothing written
in stone yet and no reason to believe
that we're, you know, out in the middle
of nowhere with no hope in sight.
So that's my preview of the game.
We've gotta show up.
So if you're gonna be
at the game one, say hi.
If you see us.
Speaker: If not, have a blast and
uh, I'll see you on the other side.
Bye everybody.
Mario: I really hope that Angela's
having fun on her birthday
trip and birthday, uh, week.
I'm sorry that the match on your actual
birthday weekend did not come out the
way we wanted to, but hopefully a win
against San Diego at home is going to.
Right the ship and right
the wrong there for you.
And hopefully that's, that's what we get.
one little last side note that we, that
I didn't get to at the beginning of this
and I completely forgot as I was going
through, and you know, who's the one
editing I am, but I'm still gonna say
here Angela again doing her damn thing.
Did an amazing job.
At another panel again at Watch
me this time, kicking off the
Long Beach Pride festivities.
as Angela let us know, the Long
Beach pride actually happens in
May before actual pride for, you
know, everywhere else in June.
Long Beach kind of takes it a whole,
they make the party two months long.
Angela was part of this panel, at
Watch Me Again with some heavy hitters.
We had Julie Erman from, angel City.
We had Maybelle Blair, who is a,
baseball league of their own legend.
And they also had Erin Arendse.
And I'm apologizing if I don't get your
name correctly, but they are the, um,
program director for Equality California
and all of that with our Angela being
part of this, not only being part of
this panel, but moderating this panel.
Angela was asked to come in and
moderate this panel and again.
So proud of what she's been doing,
so proud of the opportunities she's
been trying to seize and all the
things that are coming her way.
So if you see her again, she's.
Celebrating her birthday essentially
all month long till it, till she has
to hand the baton over to my birthday.
And then I get it for a short period
before I give it to my daughter.
So if you see her wish, her
happy birthday, all the dms, all
of that stuff, keep 'em coming.
she deserves it.
It's great.
