Angel City FC 2026 Preview

Mario: Welcome to Casual fc, an Angel
City match preview and footy therapy pod

Featuring two certified footy therapists.

I'm your host Mario Salazar,
with my fabulously blown dry

hair, co-host Angela Morales.

Angela: Me with my hair down for the
first time in, I don't know, six months.

And it'll probably go up halfway
through this episode 'cause

I'm already getting warm.

Mario: It's too hot.

It's too damn hot.

Lemme put it in the bun.

Angela: my hair is never this long.

My hair's like maybe to here and

Mario: That's true.

Angela: yeah, my hair

Mario: It

Angela: extra eight inches longer than
it normally is, and it's just too much.

But also I don't feel like
going to get my hair cut.

Jess.

That's my friend who does my hair.

I

Mario: well,

Angela: like doing it.

I,

Mario: yeah, I get it.

I mean, even I, even as short
as mine usually is, it's still,

Angela: it's just something
else I have to do Anyway.

We have

Mario: yeah.

Angela: to talk about, like

Mario: All right,

Angela: so

Mario: this is our special
episode of All Things Angel City,

Angela: all of them.

I.

Mario: all of them.

We were actually planning on this
being two episodes, but life Happens,

we pivot, and this is one episode
and we're gonna cover everything.

and also people gotta wake up
really early tomorrow, so we're

gonna probably speed through this

Angela: I'm people I gotta be work at.

It's, it's Tuesday night
at, I'm looking at like up

Mario: 10 o'clock.

Angela: have a clock on my iPad.

It's 9 53 on Tuesday night and
your girls gotta be work at six.

So

Mario: if you normally listen to us on 1.5

or two, you might wanna slow it back down.

Angela: down.

It's exactly what it is.

Like maybe pause.

Mario: Wow.

All right.

we've got the who's in,
who's out from last season.

key dates heading into the home
opener, and then our kind of deep

dive into the roster, and, and more.

This one's a big doozy one,
so let's, let's too much.

so if you're listening at
home, sit tight, chill.

If you're in the car,
don't let traffic get you.

you know, and we'll keep you company
and, if you're listening during

your workout, 'cause I know some
of you do, let's get you hyped.

Angela: What's up

Mario: All right.

Angela: I know Yesi listens
her during her workout.

Mario: Exactly.

Angela: listens first
thing in the morning.

Like I can tell you when certain
people listen to the show.

hi guys.

All right, so first up we have the
two preseason matches from Coachella.

match was against Portland.

We won two.

Nothing Or two Nothing.

I wish two to one, honestly.

Great.

Mario: It looked good.

Angela: we looked, we
looked way more organized.

I mean, I know.

Okay.

Disclaimer, we

Mario: to last year?

Angela: so hard for this preseason
Angel City team last year.

I really, truly think there's
a different vibe this year.

Especially after this last weekend
in the Jersey reveal and all the

things like the gelling that we have
wanted to happen is happening and the

vibes are vibing and things are good.

definitely way more cohesion.

It's our midfield looks super
different, way more organized.

will say I will never, ever,
ever get used to seeing M.A.

in a different kid.

Like I just refuse.

she actually had hit us up to be
like, are you gonna be in Coachella?

And neither one of us were like, and both
of us were like, just, no, sorry, bey.

Mario: No,

Angela: it

Mario: no.

Angela: But

Mario: that weekend.

Angela: I know like that
the Coachella weekends were

insanely busy for both of us.

It's

Mario: Hence why this episode
is coming out as one man.

One main one,

Angela: So then match two
the following weekend.

So it was like Valentine's
weekend, the weekend of the 21st.

we played against Seattle.

lost two to one, but I'm not
concerned partially because half

came, we subbed on our trial lists.

They subbed on their starters,
like they're like bigger names.

So yeah, I would expect
a second goal to happen.

Like I'm not, it's fine.

The team has a plan.

They have a mission.

They're incredibly driven, then fast
forward leads us to last weekend

or this, like just this past one

Mario: yeah.

Angela: so we had the Jersey
Reveal League wide on Thursday,

Mario: Mm-hmm.

Angela: which, what do you think?

How, how you feeling?

Mario: About our jersey

Angela: Mm-hmm.

Mario: about the league wide jerseys.

Angela: Yes.

All of it.

Just

Mario: All of it.

Angela: quick and are you

Mario: quick, quick and dirty.

I think overall we're,
we're trending higher.

We're trending better.

overall, you know, we, we have not
necessarily been the biggest fans of the

Nike templated kits, that the NWSL gets.

it, it, sometimes some of the teams can
get super creative within the template.

Other teams like go, yeah.

Base model is fine.

you know, debut kits for Denver
and Boston, the home kits,

they're, they're not, they're fine.

They're, eh, I do Boston's awake kit.

It's a black, like neon
splash type of thing.

It's just, it's just a cool, fun
color to have, like in a first kit.

The San Diego kit I thought was,
looked plain at the beginning,

but then it's one of those where
like it gets you in the details.

Like the Balboa tile on the, on
all the details was really nice.

and it's a really nice cream color.

I'm glad that they didn't go white.

I don't think any of the teams went
full white, kits this year right now.

Angela: And even the San Diego kit has
a really cool, pattern woven into it.

Like it's embossed,

Mario: Oh, oh, okay.

Angela: to the, to the cream.

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: there

Mario: But overall,

Angela: of, experimentation,
I think is a good

Mario: yeah,

Angela: clubs are getting,
there're allowed to have fun,

Mario: yeah,

Angela: is really, really, really nice

Mario: yeah.

But then we get to the
best kit hands down,

Angela: down.

Mario: hands down of the mall,
the flare kit and it, when.

I kid you not, when the teaser came
out, there was a teaser that Angel City

put out of, they had the kit in the, at
the training facility, and they had all

the players as they're walking in see
it and their kind of reaction to it.

and one of them said, it feels
like we're gonna go into battle.

It feels like a shield going
into battle or something.

Angela: Yep.

Mario: in my head, I'm
like, it's a center logo.

It's a center crest.

Angela: so many people was,
were like, center logo, center

logo, cool, cool, cool, cool.

Mario: And the thing is that I, I, off
the top of my head, I couldn't remember

any Nike kits that had the center logo.

I know that Adidas kits had the
center logo, and you know, recently

Adidas got rid of the Adidas part.

It's just the try, the, the three stripes.

but yeah, it looks great.

Angela: have the shield like

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: center is so

Mario: And it just like, and
it looks like it's bursting.

Angela: yeah.

Mario: it's called the Flare Kit.

Angela: I am curious how it's going
to appear on screen, like on a, a

player broadcast, like a, a game
broadcast, not just like a commercial

Mario: oh, it's, it's probably
just gonna look black.

Angela: where you kind of like get
the little like crawly guys going

Mario: Yeah,

Angela: but.

Mario: yeah,

Angela: think for the matches,
I think it'll be fine.

Mario: yeah.

It'll look black on screen.

but again, it's the, you know, I do
appreciate, I do appreciate overall

there's a trend in, in kits of like
kind of leaning into the street wear or

leaning into possible out regular wear.

Angela: yeah.

Mario: and, I, yeah, I think.

I think all the tiny details,
all the little things make

it, make it really, unique

Angela: Mm-hmm.

Mario: you know, the, the type of
little, like the, the type of detail in

the flare, like there's these, they're
basically really elongated as, or

that's the way I see them, flaring out.

So it's not just straight
lines all the way across.

The one thing that I did didn't see
in any of the photos, and I was like,

Ooh, that's a nice little detail.

There's a twist on the, in the collar.

Yeah.

And it looks, it looks really good too.

'cause it's like a, it is just a tiny
little like they, like they invert.

So it looks like a little twist
in the collar as it goes around,

where the pink like dips in.

yeah, I think the, I think
overall it looks great.

And then that paired with the
last year's away kit, the,

Angela: The,

Mario: the LA kit.

Angela: the combo, the
best combo of jerseys too.

Mario: Yeah.

Yeah.

Angela: super detailed, super
different, but much Los Angeles.

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: out to Amaya and her team because
she's worked so hard on those kids.

The design team has worked so hard.

it's so fun getting, like we, we
got to talk to her a bunch about it

on Sunday, at the Sunday, Sunday,

Mario: Saturday, whatever
the, the reveal day.

yeah.

And what was really cool also that
I didn't realize till afterwards was

that all the, all the kids that were
styled were all styled by Sarah Gorden.

Angela: Yeah.

Yeah.

Super.

So there's a lot to
talk about from Sunday.

honestly has been my favorite
event that the team has thrown

of Like was so much fun.

Everyone was just milling around,
hanging out, talking to, you know,

it's like you're talking to strangers,
but given that you have Angel City

in common, are you really strangers?

You

Mario: Yeah,

Angela: at least three people, you
know, overlapping because of the team

and it, we got to talk to Sarah Gorden,
Ary Borges, Karsyn Cherry, there's a

couple other players there that I didn't
get to talk to, just 'cause time and

Mario: and crowd and let every,
let everybody else have a chance.

Angela: But no, it was, it was super fun.

I took some trading cards to get signed,
and this last ver, this last volume two

set from last season that Parkside put
out, they had cards, oh, I should have

pulled them, called Throw In A Fit.

And it was like walk-in
outfits and things like that.

And they had a Sarah Gorden one, and
they had a Ary one for Ary Borges.

I brought them thinking
maybe I'll get them signed.

over there.

And Mario texted me like, I'm
over where Sarah Gorden is.

And I was like, where is that?

Like I, it wasn't that big, but
I didn't know where she was, so

I was like, dude, I don't know.

I found

Mario: There's big crowds everywhere.

It was like, yeah.

Angela: yeah, you couldn't
tell who was where.

But I go, I finally end up talking to
Sarah and I was like, would it, you know,

is it cool if I ask you to sign this?

And she's yeah, sure.

And so she grabbed the, the
card and she goes, what is this?

Where does this come from?

Who made this what?

And I explained oh no, like the Parkside
that did the trading cards this last, and

she goes, this, this was part of a set.

And I said, yeah, look at
the one I brought for Ary.

And she just went, ah,
she's going to love this.

they, they were both so excited.

Ary saw the card and she goes,
I hadn't even seen this one.

This is so dope.

Because the, the set came out
towards the end of the season,

you know, they didn't get to see a
lot of those before things ended.

but it was, it was so much fun.

We ta I talked to a lot
of the front office folks.

We talked to, Yerba Madre, which that's
a conversation for a different day.

But the team is super excited and
you can tell the vibe this year

is so different the front office.

It's different from the

Mario: Yeah,

Angela: staff is different.

Mario: the energy was way
up and the energy was fun.

I brought my daughter to it and
typically we don't go to the

events just 'cause kids' schedules.

you know, it just happened to
work out that we could this time.

and my son stayed home, with
my wife and then I took my

daughter and we had fun there.

she got a kit, so she's super happy.

She's excited

Angela: looked like

Mario: games this year.

Oh yeah, she had a blast.

guess who finally got to go
to an event together and did

not take a picture together.

Angela: Spoiler alert, it's us.

Mario: Yay.

We know how to do things.

Angela: and say, okay,
this is a planning meeting.

Don't take any pictures.

We do things, we go to a
concert, don't take any pictures.

there's no actual evidence that Mario
and I are friends aside from this book.

the

Mario: but I did

Angela: or Go ahead.

Go

Mario: Uhhuh.

Angela: Go ahead.

Mario: I was gonna say, well,
I mean, separately we ended up

getting pictures with people.

I ended up getting a pic, picture
with, Strauss and, and told him

again about the pod and he was
aware and I was like, awesome.

Angela: he put me on
notice after you left.

Mario: Oh yeah.

Angela: also introduce myself
'cause he had come over to where

we were and I was like, oh, hey
coach, I'm Angela from Casual fc.

He goes, oh, I know.

And I was like, oh And he was
like, you know, you better

say nice things this season.

And I was like, you
better gimme reason to No.

But it was, it was really fun and
it was a really nice conversation.

And even he's super excited.

He goes, there's still a

Mario: Yeah,

Angela: The next couple weeks are super
important, but we're all really excited.

And it didn't

Mario: yeah,

Angela: you know what I mean?

It didn't feel

Mario: yeah.

It,

Angela: be

Mario: it didn't, it
didn't feel manufactured.

It didn't feel okay, now
this is gonna happen.

Now celebration, now
everybody do the poppers.

you know, it wasn't, the one part
that was a little funny, just the

whole interaction, as, as we left,
right, we, I, you know, we said bye

to you and everything like that.

We were leaving and, you know, I took
pictures of my daughter and she was

having fun and whatnot, and then I asked
her, we were leaving, there was a lot of

wheat paste posters, on the walls, right?

It's like the, the kind of
style that, that they're doing

with the promo and stuff.

And we passed one of the walls.

And I asked my daughter, I was like,
do you want a picture in front of that?

She goes, yeah.

And so we walk up to it and then I
see two people just standing right

there and we just wanted to get in the
corner real quick and take a picture.

So I go, oh, excuse me, can I said,
can you guys take a picture of us?

And then he turns around
and he goes, oh yeah, sure.

And then I was like, okay.

But I'm like, I'm keeping eyes on
my daughter trying to like, you

know, once they're doing this, a

Angela: brain going

Mario: yeah, they're doing us a favor.

Hurry up, let's not like dick around.

Right?

and then the woman was like, oh
yeah, oh, look at that future player.

'cause she had her kid on and everything.

And we were like, oh yeah, it's so nice.

And then the man kept walking
with us and I was like, no, this

is like in my head, my monologue
was, no, this is not how it works.

No, I didn't ask.

F why are you walking with us?

I asked you to take a picture.

and then I look up to actually
see this person's face.

Oh yeah.

It was Bob Iger.

Angela: Just the owner of the team

Mario: Yeah.

The owner of the team, CEO of Disney.

Like

I'm pretty sure he heard pick
and was like, yeah, yeah, sure.

And so he came over, we got a
picture with Bob Iger and I was

like, that's pretty awesome.

and, and then I explained to my
daughter who Bob Iger was afterwards,

and she was like, oh, that's cool.

And so she was really excited to
tell, my wife when we got home.

But yeah, overall it was
a fun, it was a fun event.

Angela: Yeah, it

Mario: am super pumped for the season.

I can't wait.

we've got what, a week and a half?

Angela: Mm-hmm.

Mario: till, till kickoff.

So

Angela: A week till our first
official, like season match

Mario: match preview.

Yep.

Angela: which

Mario: That's a.

Angela: rosters will be locked by
the time we record that episode.

Will

Mario: Yes, yes.

Angela: They won't be.

Mario: No, they won't be.

Well,

Angela: be.

We.

Mario: no, they won't be technically.

Okay.

that, let's just talk about
the, the dates coming up.

I erased the other stuff that was on here.

So there was a roster lock, at some
point, but the big one is, in about a

week, March 11th is roster compliance.

So any, invitees, any trainees,
any, whoever cannot, you know,

they can't be on the team anymore.

Team has to put in their,
22 to 26 player squad.

by the 11th, doesn't mean it's locked.

It means they just need to finally
register and put the official names of

who's going to be counted, for the season.

Very first game is going to
be on Sunday, April 15th.

I mean, not April 15th, geez.

It's going to be on Sunday, March 15th,

Angela: Your

Mario: in a week.

Angela: yet.

Like

Mario: Oh man.

And then, right after that, on Monday
the 16th, the transfer window closes.

So that's kind of your
defacto, you're locked.

you with your, with your team, movement
player moving can still happen.

it has to be, there, there's different
compliance things that have to happen if

you want to keep moving players around.

We can talk about that later.

But those are the main kind of things.

interesting little tidbits
about the season coming up.

We have nine home matches that are
gonna be on the weekend, like Saturday

and Sunday matches, which is great.

We have three almost weekend home matches,
which is gonna be Friday night matches.

we have only two school night matches,
which is like a Monday to Thursday.

I'm counting Monday to Thursday,
Sunday, technically a school

night 'cause, but whatever.

And out of all of those
matches, there will be six.

What the discord has dubbed sauna matches.

Angela: Yeah.

Mario: was calling them sunburn matches
because they are in the middle of

the summer before 7:00 PM which means
most of the places that you sit in

the stadium, if you're not on the
west side, you're gonna get burned.

You're gonna get sun for a
good portion of the game.

Some of these games, you're gonna
get sun for the entirety of the game.

So water, sunblock, big hats,

Angela: Reapply the

Mario: stuff.

Angela: like all of that.

Mario: Yes, yes.

On a, on a day like that,
don't wait the two hours.

Re reapply.

Re beginning of the game.

Especially if you were tailgating,
beginning of the game, halftime

afterwards, you'll be good.

Angela: one of those like
wands, like the stick guy where

you just like, go like this.

It's great.

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: cool.

Mario: Yeah.

and, things to look forward to
is, San Andrea's Cup this year.

And I'm do, I'm really excited,
especially 'cause it's gonna

happen super early and super late.

So they're kind of book ending
the season, which is amazing.

all right, next thing that we're
gonna go out, who's out, who's

been, who's left during this off
season and during the last season?

Angela: This feels

Mario: who left?

Angela: a, like a YM
or like a 17 magazine.

Who's in,

Mario: in the, who's

Angela: what's out this summer?

Mario: Well, that's,

Angela: who's out hit us.

Mario: in my head as I was
typing this out, it was very much

project one way, like one day
you're in, next day you're out.

Angela: Yeah.

Yeah.

Mario: Okay.

Angela: it.

Yeah.

It's very much the vibe,

Mario: Number one on the list, which
was completely surprising to me.

I'm like, oh shit.

That just only happened this last season,

Vanessa Gilles, remember her.

Yeah.

she finally was fully traded, contract was
fully executed, no longer a lone player

from Angel City, just full on player.

but that happened this
lap, this past season.

So she's, she's been on the, she's been
on the payroll, in a four Oh away land.

Most, most of her angel City career.

But, you know, great to see
her doing what she's doing.

she had a pretty good match and
a pretty good TSS up, a tuffle

tussle, during the Canada Match.

yeah.

Good, good stuff.

We know that press and,
Ali retired last year.

Alanna Kennedy and Katie Zelem
both moved to the WSL M.A.

moved up to Portland.

Julie Defore also moved up to Portland.

She's now on an SEI though this season.

Angela: was, she like scored a
banger or knee disappeared and it

Mario: Yeah, yeah,

Angela: not right.

Mario: that's mine.

Hannah Johnson, moved on or moved
on to Lexington SC in the Gaines

Bridge Super League, right?

No.

Yes, they are part of that one.

Yeah.

Alyssa Thompson again lost her
over to the, WSL, but she's doing

amazing with Chelsea and, Brianna
Norris is, off to Brooklyn FC in the

Gaines, Gaines Bridge Super League.

So those were all the players that l.

Angela: yeah, like during the season,

Mario: Yeah, that was,
that was during the season.

off season.

We lost, mbi, which was,

Angela: depressing.

Mario: of hurt.

It kind of hurt over, over the break.

but Miyabi left off to Utah and, it, it
kind of feels like, you know, it might

be a better suit with, the other Japanese
players that are, are playing there too.

Angela: Yeah.

Mario: Yeah.

you know, best, best of luck to her.

Hannah, some Hannah Stambaugh.

our, third keeper, she is the third.

She's off to, Boston Legacy.

So she's, joining the new team,
(Madison) Hammond, who was a year one.

Angela: Mm-hmm.

Mario: Angel City is off to
Utah, so and so is Megan Reid.

Megan Reid is our, one of our
other year ones who has, finally

moved on and, joining the Denver
Summit, for their inaugural years.

you know, it, it, again, e all these
players that we've been with for

so long, seeing them in a different
kit is going to be weird, but,

you know, best of luck to them.

Sara Doorsoun, who was here and had
an international spot, went back to,

Germany and is with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Lily Nabet got traded.

She was on loan to Fort Lauderdale
during the season, but then, after that

got traded off to the Carolina Ascent.

And then last that kind of
also stung a little Macy Hodge

is now at racing Louisville.

Angela: Yep.

It's a lot.

It's a lot to talk about.

I will say really quick, there was
a lot of talk about Sara Doorsoun

leaving and being like, I just
wanted to go back home to Germany.

And people are like,
who would wanna do that?

And I'm like,

Mario: Who wouldn't.

Angela: new thinking it's gonna be a great
fit and you don't like, it's too far.

You know,

Mario: Yeah,

Angela: big and it's not
what you expected it to be.

And by all means, like that's the
whole point of agency and, and player.

Your movement is that you can do that.

You can

Mario: yeah,

Angela: decision for yourself
so you aren't miserable.

Mario: yeah, yeah.

Angela: All right.

I feel like I need to
like stretch and okay,

Mario: Get ready?

Angela: there's so much to talk

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: now we're, so that was the
Who's out, who's in so many people?

We'll go over the full roster
and what we have as of today,

tonight at, you know, 10 o'clock.

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: knows what'll happen tomorrow.

The second this thing drops
it because we are who we're,

so as of right now, secured players,
we've got Hina Sugita signed through 2029.

Thank goodness we've got
Riley Tiernan Jersey's finest.

Signed through 2028.

Nealy Martin Goalkeeper
extraordinaire, signed through 2027.

Savvy King is off the SEI list.

And then we get to talk
about our new signings.

Mario: What?

I wanna see what order you're gonna go in.

Angela: You know who I'm saving for

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: so let's start with the rookies.

got Taylor Suarez, who played at
Florida State, is also the alma

mater of another player we picked up.

So when they were dropping the player
hints, everybody's yes, no, yes, no.

But Tiller Suarez is signed with the team.

With the team through 2028.

She was a injury replacement
player for the 2022 CONCACAF U 17

championship, and she had a game
winning assist, which is a banger.

That's dope.

part of the U 20 team for the 2024
World Cup, and as a sophomore at Florida

State, she had five goals, nine assists
across 22 games the NCAA tournament.

She had one goal and five
assists, including the assist.

To help Nguyen the final,
to Nguyen the championship.

a CC team.

M.A.

team.

Yeah.

All a CC team.

Second team, all American, the NCAA
all tournament team, no big deal.

Just some accolades, like

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: And that's, you know, with three
years of starting out of her four, so

very excited to see how she integrates
with the team, how she, settles in.

She looked really good in Coachella,
so I'm excited to see how that

shifts a little and into the, the
transition of the regular season.

We have Carina Lageyre
from Duke through 2028.

I think we're doing like three
year contracts right now.

Especially for the rookies

Mario: Well, we learned our lesson.

That's why.

Angela: Yeah.

and I think too, three years in the NWSL
is like known for the rebuilding process.

that cycle is.

You get the people you need, you
build them, you execute the plan.

We're kind of in the, I wanna
say we're like in year, like

Mario: 1.5.

Angela: two, and like 1.5

to 2.5,

depending on different people.

there's, we're not quite in one true
cycle 'cause so many people came

in at different times last season.

So it's like we're, kind of there
we're like in like in year one and

a half, I'd say maybe closer to two.

I'd hope so.

Then for Karina, she scored
three game winners at Duke.

her time there, she contributed in
56 different wins and had two NCAA

college cup appearances, which is
essentially their like tournament, their,

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: tournament.

She was the number four high
school prospect in the country.

Mario: Okay.

Angela: deal.

Just, that's fine.

Easy peasy.

She was also a top ranked
midfielder in the state of Florida.

So she goes from being top ranked
interstate to number four overall

prospect across the country.

You know, it's fine.

She also played in the national level
at U 15, U 17 and U 20 levels and was

part of the UEFA Women's Development
Tournament in 2022 with the U seventeens

And then for the rookies, last but
not least, we have Karsyn Cherry

who got to meet on Sunday at the
event and is pumped for this season.

she

Mario: who that was.

Angela: Yeah.

Mario: I saw people.

Angela: both there?

Mario: Okay.

I saw people swarming a player
and I was like, I'm looking.

It's either a player that I'm not sure of,
or some influencer that I don't know of.

either way.

I don't know who this person is, is,
so I'm just gonna move along long.

Angela: No, she was super stoked
to be at the event, meet people.

She was like, I, I asked her, I was
like, how's LA trading you so far?

And she was like, is
this place actually real?

And I was like, what do you mean?

And she's look, are you from la?

And I was like, born and raised.

And she's okay.

every time I think, oh my God,
this can be my life, like it is.

And I was like, oh, that it's
84 degrees a Sunday in February.

She's what is that?

I was like, yeah, we got, yeah.

but she, she's having a great time and
she said she's really settling in nice.

She loves the team.

that I talked to over the weekend said
from the tippy top of the front office.

the very last player on the team,
every single level of employee,

teammate, you know, coaching
staff, technical staff, whatever,

everyone has bought into the goal.

It is, there's been a big shift.

So I'm very excited for this
season based on what they said.

Yesi friend of the pod also
wound up teaching Carina tried

to get Sarah Gorden out there and
she did get out there for a hot

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: multiple people in the front
office became a little celebrity

of the line dance that happened.

Started with three people.

It was Yesi and two members of the
front office, and then some kids came

in, and then some other adults and then
some more people, and then the players

got involved and then four songs later.

I'm talking to Ary, Ary Borges and
we're just like cracking up and

she's is this, this just happened?

And I'm like, this is what happens.

Like on the concourse in
the stadium, outside the

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: all while you're
prepping for the game.

And she was like, what?

Yeah, it was, it was such a beautiful
showing of our fan base and of

the community around the team.

But for Karsyn, she's coming from the
University of Louisville again on a

three year rookie contract in her sea
se her Caesar, in her senior season

in 2025, she helped Louisville get
back to the a CC tournament and then,

or so there were back in the a CC
attorney for the first time since 2020,

which feels like it was yesterday.

Also feels like it was
a hundred years ago.

And then it was the first time
Louisville was back in the,

the NCAA tournament since 2019.

So a six and seven year drought was
a pretty big deal across her career.

her senior year at Louisville, she,
or junior and senior year, I believe

she was the captain for the team.

then across her career she had 12 goals
for the team, which is super great.

And honestly, right now I'm just
really excited and as much as these

players did in high school and college
and all of that, like obviously

they're good enough to get signed.

I'm excited to see how they
integrate into our system more

than anything, because you can

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: accolades, but like

Mario: And I also think there's,
there's a little bit of, like you were

saying, we're in that kind of year 1.5,

2.5

of the rebuild.

there has been now a solid presence,
soccer presence in the front office.

Right.

not to say that any of our
previous, rookie pickups or

anything like that were bad choices.

It's just

Angela: at all.

Mario: we are, we're now.

Angela: We're

Mario: There, there's a system,
there's been something established,

and now we're building into that rather
than trying to fit pieces and holes.

Right.

Square peg, round hole type thing.

I think so, I think hopefully
that these choices and these

pickups are geared towards that
system that, Strauss and team are,

Angela: Mm-hmm.

Mario: and the, the better you find those
players that match the system or match

the style of play or, you know, the,
the easier they're gonna gel into it

and seeing how everybody's hyped for it.

I'm, I'm hyped too.

Angela: it's hard

Mario: we've,

Angela: now.

Mario: it's hard not to be.

We were burned by the Coachella, hype
Nest last year, so still with a little

bit of reservation, but really excited.

Angela: cool, and then
Sunday happened and I'm like.

Mario: Let's go.

Angela: let's go.

but with new players, we also have
Faith Nguyen, who was signed out

of UCLA on a six month contract.

She actually trained with Angel City
last year, but in college she had a 0.789

career save percentage.

So like 79% save
percentage, which is insane.

she had 41 appearances
and 19 clean sheets.

So a, an almost 80% save percentage and
half of her appearances were clean sheets.

Cool.

like who's mad at that?

Who's mad?

I mean, and we already have
Angelina Anderson and Hannah Seber.

Like we have two awesome keepers with a
third as a backup who is equally as good.

So then we have two more heavy hitters
that we picked up in the off season.

The first one, which I had a feeling
was gonna happen 'cause it was rumored.

And then when the player number
wasn't announced the trade or with

the free agency pickup, I knew we
were, we were losing Maisie Hodge

Mario: Ugh.

Angela: eight.

but we have picked up Ary Borges
racing Louisville through 2028.

This was, I think, a little bit of
a controversial signing because Ary

is known as like the hat trick queen
coming out of Brazil with Laila.

they're both like scoring machines.

But there was some controversy,
controversy last season with Ary.

She didn't end up playing against us in
BMO whole thing, but clean slate, new

start, new environment, knew everything.

Talking to her on Sunday, I
like, I asked her like, biggest

difference between Louisville and.

LA and she goes, there's no snow.

Well there's snow, but it's far away.

I don't have to deal with it here.

And I was like, cool.

She's what is that?

I'm like, I don't know.

She said, LA reminded her
a lot of Brazil and the

Mario: Yeah,

Angela: of, of in Brazil.

And she goes, she said,
she's loving it so far.

She goes, I haven't had this much fun
playing soccer in a very long time.

Mario: that's great.

Angela: very fun and very dangerous
because the more fun you're having at

a very high level, the scarier you are.

Mario: Remember everyone,
this is a game we're watching.

People play a game.

Very good people, very talented people.

Still a game, right?

Like

Angela: Yeah.

Mario: it's,

Angela: human.

Mario: yeah, exactly.

But you know, to.

To what Angelo was saying earlier,
especially with Sarah Doorsoun, if you're

not having fun, if you're not comfortable,
if you're not in the space that you wanna

be in, then you're not gonna be performing
or you're not gonna, have the drive.

And the more comfortable you are, the
more, the, the bigger the drive, right?

Angela: Yeah, the better you play.

'cause you're more relaxed,
you're not in your head as much.

Mario: yeah.

Angela: so to give you a little
bit back of background on Ary,

played with Palmeiras before racing
for Three Seasons, which is a, a

Brazilian team that Kansas City lost.

Bia Zaneratto too.

She went back home, she said later
guys gonna go be with my fam.

but she played there for three seasons.

She had five goals over 32 caps.

And with racing across 53
caps, she had three goals.

there was a lot of, hardship on the team.

Injury wise.

She was injured.

EZ was going through stuff.

So it's been a weird couple
years for racing as a whole.

But with the Brazilian national team,
has had 30 caps, so 30 appearances

for the national team with 10 goals.

So it's a goal every three games.

Which is a lot,

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: especially because that's
not a team that plays together.

Like it's not your club team.

You're not playing with
those players all the time.

It, it takes a second to adjust and
to find each other and all that.

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: she was originally called up
in September, 2020 by Pia who used to

coach the women's national team here in
the US in the way, way back, in 2022.

She was part of the squad that won the
Copa America where she scored two goals.

And just to remember, for those people
outside of, or I should say that for

people inside the US as bad bunny reminded
everyone, there is no real north or

South America in the rest of the world.

That's a western thing.

It's just a America

Mario: it's one landmass.

Angela: one big land mass
because we're connected.

So America, central America, south America
is just a America like it's just one.

So just a reminder.

That's why there's so
much America, everywhere.

But in 2023 she made her World Cup debut
against Panama where she scored a hat

trick and Brazil won four, nothing.

She was named the player of the match.

Obviously if you score
a hat trick like duh.

in 2024 she had a knee injury and had
knee surgery, which is why she didn't

make the Olympic squad obviously makes

Mario: Yeah,

Angela: But then in 2025 she was again
called up for the national team, which

the Brazilian team won Copa Medica again,

she is a very skilled, very gritty
midfielder, which I think we need

like between her and Hina, SIDA in
the midfield and then our babies.

Very excited.

Very, very, very, very, very excited.

And then last and certainly not least
the, and I like screamed about and

had to like, keep my cool about at
work because I'm trying to work.

Meanwhile I'm like, ah.

Mario: I, I got some text.

Angela: Just a few.

And Mario is, Mario himself
is oh, that's so great.

Who?

we signed another Florida state Great.

In Emily Sams, through
a trade with Orlando.

three year contract.

Seems to be having a great
fricking time out here in LA

with her husband and her cats.

She was posting how the cats were,
adjusting in their hotel room.

It was very silly.

She has been making waves
on the national team.

She had the armband recently.

She got called up for, she believes,
then she scored in one of the friendlies.

So Emily Sams is to, sneeze
at, I'll tell you that much.

She won the 2021, NCAA championship with
the Seminoles at Florida State, where she

also earned, all team American honors.

So all team, all American honors.

It's a first team, all
Americans essentially.

I'm like, how can I say this in a
way that makes sense to literally

anything outside of my brain.

signed with racing
Louisville in May of 22.

had nine appearances and
four goals and she was M.A.

named two.

the best 11 second team.

That's just her rookie season, kind
like half, not even a full season.

It was like very small.

really recognized that she was there.

She forgoes her final season at Florida
State spends half that season Sweden.

Which do you know any history of like
national team players going to Sweden

and coming back as like different people,
like just different level of defense,

different levels of just they, something
happens like Christen Press, Ali Riley,

hey, out like big, big names Alex Morgan.

Granted, the league wasn't what it is.

It didn't exist for a hot minute.

Mario: Wait, who?

Just kidding.

I'm just kidding.

I'm just kidding.

Angela: I got so many texts about you not
knowing who Kelly O'Hara was, just FYI.

But

Mario: Oh shit.

Angela: are you still fr how
are you still friends with him?

Especially from people who know
how much I love Kelly as like

Mario: I,

Angela: a meme as a player, as an icon.

Mario: I, I, I think it's hilarious
that the way all of this works and

the way, you are the social butterfly
among, like the sports fans, right?

you get the communications first rather
than the both of us, or rather than

like our, our Instagram or anything
like that, it's like directly to you.

Angela: to me.

Angela, what the heck?

Why did Mario not know
who Kelly O'Hara was?

Mario: I'm glad that people are
listening till the end of the episode.

Angela: Yeah.

Yes.

He was like, what was that?

And I'm like, it happened.

We've moved past it.

but just to kind of finish up with
Emily Sams, she joined the Orlando

Pride officially from the draft.

She was the third overall pick.

She's the 2024 Defender
of the year in 2024.

She was also, as part
of team of the month.

Three times she was part of the best 11.

Granted, this is also the year they
won the shield and the championship.

When I said they're
running away with this.

And then they subsequently did.

and then she was also, she started
as an alternate, was called up

due to injury during the Olympics.

So she was part of the 2024
Gold Medal Olympic Squad.

She's not going anywhere when it
comes to national team because

Mario: No.

Angela: I'm also so excited
because we have the ability.

To have three.

Emily's in our back line
on the national team.

Emily Sonnet, one of my favorite players.

Emily Fox, one of my favorite players.

Emily Sam's easily becoming one of
my top favorite players currently.

Like need one more Emily.

Sorry, Giselle, but we need one more
Emily to make it like the Emily's, it

feels very much like the Ashley's from

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: But yeah, that's,
those are our new signings.

Those are people to be
extra excited about.

And then we have like our current roster,

Mario: Yes.

So

Angela: I'm so excited about.

Mario: our, our roster sounds good.

I mean, if, if you're, if you're
new, if you're a casual, if you're

just learning about a lot of these
players, if you've been anywhere around

Angel City, the sphere of it, like
these names are recognizable, these

names are hopefully something that
you've at least heard a little bit,

to everybody who's, a soccer crazy.

Then you are super excited and like
feeling like this is a solid team.

Right.

we have our three goalkeepers, Angeline
Anderson, Hannah Seabert, and Faith.

Winn Faith is on the six
month contract, like we said.

that may be just due to trying her out.

It's always good to have a third keeper.

so let's see if, if it works out and she
gets a, a longer contract at that point.

Hannah Seberts on, the last year,
this is all according to Sport Track

when I checked this like weeks ago.

So if anything has
changed, don't come at me.

It's been a long day.

but we do have Angelina Anderson
locked at least for more than a year.

So we're, we're good there.

in our defense, in our back line, we
have Sarah Gorden, who's also on her last

year of her contract, has a mutual option
for 2027 though, so that could just.

Angela: that will be, re-upped.

Mario: Yeah, yeah, definitely.

s king off the SEI list.

So putting her back into the list
of, currently signed players.

Sophia, Matt, Mattis.

Mattis.

Mattis.

Angela: I don't know, because
the official, like media guide

doesn't, it, has it, I haven't seen it the
same way twice across different things.

So hopefully that'll get
cleared up this season.

Mario: We will figure it out this
season 'cause we are applying for

every single media pass we can.

So we will be talking to
people as best we can.

also on her last Sophia's, also on her
last year of her contract, we've also

got Evelyn Shores, Gisele Thompson, Emily
Sams and Karsyn Cherry in our back line.

Angela: and now the midfield

Mario: and now the midfield.

Yes.

Angela: So we've got Jun Endo, who's
coming back, we've got, and she's,

she's on the road like, it's that weird
time post massive recovery where you're

almost back, but you're not quite,
and you don't wanna rush it, but you

don't know if you're being, if are
you being too cautious, are you not?

So it's this weird limbo

Mario: The big thing about, the big
thing about some of these players that

are like in that weird limo is just
the fact that they're off SEI, right?

Like they're,

Angela: Yeah.

They're off.

SEI they're, they're
past the scary part of

Mario: yeah.

Angela: Yeah.

And the good thing is, is that the team is
like, we want you to be strong completely.

We don't wanna just play it,
have these, and have you play

injured for forever, which is.

A blessing.

I know it's so hard to, like, when
you get the, the conversation with the

doctor, the, the trainer and you're just
like, oh, I'm out for another two weeks.

Or oh, I'm not ready yet.

It's so defeating.

But as somebody who's on the other
side of that, those are gonna

be the best two weeks for you.

'cause that's gonna save you from another
early, like another injury because you

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: yet.

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: super, super important.

So then we've got Jun coming back, Kennedy
Fuller, who's got a club option in 2027.

Martin, my, my Ara noose, which
has had an amazing off season.

Ended the season on a tear.

Very excited to see how
she, she handles everything.

Hina Sugita, Taylor Suarez,
Carina Lageyre, and Ary Borges.

Like no big deal.

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: Just, just insane.

The nice thing too, with.

Hina and Nealy Martin.

You have two players who
have won championships.

Two players who know what it, what it
means to make the, the, playoff push.

Emily Sams as well.

We have the play, like we have the
experience, but now we have the players

with the playoff experience of what do
you need to do to get to that final stage?

Which fingers crossed we get
a lot closer to this year.

Mario: Yep.

all right, moving on to
our attacker forwards.

we've got Prisca, ch, Prisca Chilufya.

Yes, I said that correctly.

Angela: I'm

Mario: Uh,

Angela: I

Mario: I'm, I'm,

Angela: play.

It just makes me so happy.

Mario: yeah.

we also got, brand new mom of this season.

We got Claire Emslie coming back,
from maternity leave at some point.

She's a beast, so she will be back.

Angela: different.

Mario: Yeah, she, I mean, she was
running, she was running faster than I

could ever while, eight months pregnant.

So

Angela: Yeah.

Mario: she's built different, she's also
on her last year of her contract, but

I like, if we don't re-up her, like I
don't, I don't know what we're doing.

Angela: And it would

Mario: Yeah,

Angela: because she's I just
wanna move back near my family.

You know?

I need to go back to Scotland.

Mario: yeah.

Angela: her, but

Mario: I wouldn't blame her.

I wouldn't blame her for that, but
I mean, I would blame the team for

letting her go for other stupid reason,

Angela: Yeah,

Mario: for any other
reason beyond that, no.

okay.

And then we got, Ian's daughter who's,
Was, you know, having a good season,

in the middle when she first got here.

Then it kind of evened out a little bit.

I think it was just, you know,
half a season coming off of a full

season in Europe and all of that.

I think we still got high hopes, for,
ven Deso, still, still high on her.

Larou,

Angela: Breaking news of Tuesday
afternoon at four 30 essentially.

Can I just, can I just have this one

Mario: yes, yes.

Angela: okay.

Sydney Leroux, when we signed her,
everyone was like, oh my God, she's hurt.

Right?

Nobody knew the extent of her injury.

Doctors didn't.

She didn't.

The team didn't, because sometimes
you don't see things on MRIs.

put that into perspective,
before my ankle surgery, I was

having crazy pain in my ankle.

I was getting hopped up on
meds, and I was still in pain.

Nobody could figure out why scoped
my ankle during my surgery to figure

out, you know, make sure everything
was where it was supposed to be.

They found a, like a
shark tooth in my ankle.

Mario: Wait, little, little Shark
tooth or like figurative shark tooth.

Angela: tooth shaped stabby bone

Mario: Okay.

A

Angela: own.

Making

Mario: stabby phone.

Angela: stabby

Mario: Well, okay, so I, I ask 'cause you
went to Long Beach, you know, so like you

Angela: Shark lab wasn't really a thing.

It, it just started as I was leaving.

Mario: Oh, okay.

Angela: happened in high school, like
this is just the lingering injury,

but sometimes you don't know the
severity of something until you get

opened up and they like look around
and figure out what's going on, which

is essentially what happened with Syd.

is the queen of comebacks, both
personally, professionally, and

this I think per her announcement
will be her biggest comeback.

Yet she has been a little bit more
public about private struggles going on.

we talked about it here on the podcast,
eating disorders, really trying to, to get

your stuff together before it's too late.

And think.

she's ready to come back, I don't
think anybody's gonna be upset

Mario: Yes.

Angela: the team.

She is.

Whether you sub her in, you start her.

I don't really care.

It's the same, similar to, to Christen
Press, you have her on your team.

She's a threat.

Mario: Yeah.

Angela: I if, like this past weekend,
I, I didn't watch too much of a game

because I was socializing, but US
national team is known for having

a stupid amount of amazing players.

Like in 2019, Ali Riley said, our subs
are good enough to be our starters and our

start, like it didn't matter who started
and who was up they subbed in Trinity,

Rodman, Emily, Fox, and somebody else.

I don't remember if I saw those
three coming off the bench.

Insane.

It's the same thing of
having Christen Press sub in.

Sydney Leroux sub in Ally Krieger,
like these big names that have, you

know, Pino subbing in Alex Morgan.

You see them coming off the bench.

You're like, excuse me, going home I quit.

No.

No matter how competitive you are seeing
somebody of Syd'S stature and caliber

and skill level be like, all right, I
got, I got 25 minutes of legs in me.

Let's rock and roll.

Let's see what happens.

'cause it's never out of the question.

Scoring is never out of the question.

When it comes to players like Syd ue.

I mean, we have merch with
Syd's name all over it.

We've got

Mario: Yes.

Angela: got the intro to the show
with her bicycle kick and her

comeback goal, like it's just is
important to us soccer as a whole.

But after this last year and a
half for her, may she come back

and may she like break hard and
hurt feelings with a million goals.

That's all.

Mario: Yeah.

Do we start the counter now
or with the official episodes?

Angela: No, I, I had people asking
me, what, how are we counting

how many times Angela cries?

Tears have not fallen.

My eyes have welled up.

Nothing.

No

Mario: Okay.

Angela: fallen.

Therefore it doesn't count.

Mario: Okay.

Okay.

And it's not, it's, it's not,
it's not a slight on you.

It's,

Angela: we

Mario: it's your emotions and it's
just that's how passionate you are.

And I love it.

I love it.

I think it's a great thing when we,
when we do this and I kind of do want

to kind of keep a counter for it, but,

Angela: do like an Instagram
highlight or something like that.

Like clip every time I cry.

what games Make a montage
at the end of the season.

That's what we should do.

Mario: there we go.

Angela: other ideas?

We were thinking of doing, like
business cards, but make a punch

card and I can just punch it.

Mario: Yeah.

okay.

Well, yes.

So we've got Syd, you know, we've been
big, big advocates of letting these

players come in, take their journey,
come in when they're ready, stop.

Being keyboard warrior, on the sidelines,
speculating on what's going on.

'cause we don't know and
they're human, right?

So let them be who they need
to be and let them come back

when they need to come back.

And her post was like, it's just
the silhouette it picture of her,

Angela: it

Mario: know, with

Angela: it, it wasn't a threat, it was
a promise and it was like, Ooh, like I

felt it because that's what I would do.

My, my best friend told me this
weekend when I saw him, 'cause

his son had a soccer game up.

Here he just shook his head and he
goes, you know, we're not related

by blood, but that kid has every
single weird competitive drive

that is in your brain in his.

He is more competitive
than anybody I know.

And I'm like, yeah, sorry,
I didn't mean to but

Mario: It's by osmosis.

Yeah.

Angela: Yeah, pretty much.

Mario: All right.

with that, to wrap up our attackers,
we've got, Maithe Lopez, who is still

on loan officially by the team's, roster
page with the v Vancouver Rise fc.

you know, hopefully just getting more
minutes and when she comes back, you know.

Angela: and got called up
for, Columbia National Team.

Mario: Yeah, yeah.

So hopefully big things.

we've got Riley Tiernan, our
Golden Boot Runner, in last season.

and something that I just realized
today, which I moved her from one

section to another is Casey Phair is
no longer listed as being on loan.

Angela: Yep.

Mario: She's been recalled, she's
got her wings and she's going

to be playing with, angel City.

So hopefully we get to see, more of her.

Also, this whole list
is solid, top to bottom.

Angela: Mm-hmm.

Mario: And the, the, the thing that,
that, Angela just mentioned of like a team

where you've got two sets of starters.

This is definitely a team that like

Angela: we're

Mario: by the end

Angela: that

Mario: getting into the season, by the
end of the season, we're definitely

going to have two sets of starters
where any rotation that happens is

going to be a planned rotation, is
going to be a devastating rotation.

And I want to have our angels.

We had at some point the Angel
City Revenge tour, merch that we

never kind of fulfilled 'cause
it wasn't going the right way.

Angela: there wasn't
much to get revenge on.

Mario: No, but I feel like this, not only
is your, you know, the revenge season

for a couple of our players that just
need to come back and really feel like

they, they themselves have said they
really feel like they're, they're here.

They're, they're gonna take names and,
and, you know, break hearts and whatnot.

I feel the whole team feels
that too, and I'm excited.

so yeah, that's,

Angela: drops.

We'll see if the revenge
tour merch drops this season.

Mario: yeah.

Angela: it's waiting in
the, in the angel wings.

Mario: okay.

As we're closing this out, one last thing.

We started a brand new series.

It's gonna be within our,
normal flow of episodes.

really we wanted to create a series
where we love talking about Angel City.

We're still Angel City
Homers, no matter what.

so we're always gonna be
talking about the team.

We're always talking to, be talking
about, these, Previews, match previews,

recaps, all of that good stuff,
bringing your footy therapy every week.

But we also wanted to branch out a bit
more and explore some of those stories

that we both really want to tell.

I really wanna learn, about
women's soccer in general.

you know, both in the us across,
in, other leagues around the world.

the players that are within there
that are just a amazing athletes.

so we started a new
series called Back Passes.

it's gonna be, like I said, in our normal
feed, you'll get it just whenever we

release them and they're gonna be, f.

Episodes that are gonna help fill gaps
whenever we don't have, matches and

kind of planned, breaks, you know,
and the off season moving forward.

So hopefully you guys like those.

Our first episode came out as like
our first episode for the season.

so go back and listen to that If, if you
so choose and, let us know, you know, if

there's a topic that you'd like us to deep
dive on or learn more about, and we'll

be happy to, to start putting them up.

We've got a whole list of
stuff coming for you guys.

there's apparently a PowerPoint
that I'm not aware of right now, and

I'm supposed to stay, unaware of.

I'm not googling what it's about.

So there's a whole
thing coming towards me.

so it'll be fun and,
you know, we, we, look,

Angela: know Mario gets
to learn about fert.

And that's

Mario: I'm,

Angela: saying about

Mario: I'm, I'm still not Googling it.

Angela: all.

Mario: No.

Angela: It's silly.

But yeah, tell us what you think.

Let us know.

if you have any more ideas, we
have a laundry list of things,

but no ideas too big or too small.

We're gonna plan long episodes, short
episodes, little video clips, like

there's a whole bunch of to talk about.

So we have so many different things like
ways to get that information to you.

But you made it this
far, thank you so much.
